What Is Maamoul?
Maamoul is a Lebanese shortbread cookie filled with dates, walnuts, or pistachios. Traditionally served during holidays, these buttery treats are a hit year-round.
Ingredients
For the Dough:
- 2 cups semolina flour
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup butter, melted
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1/4 teaspoon mahlab (optional)
For the Filling:
- 1 cup chopped dates
- 1/4 cup crushed walnuts or pistachios
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon rose water
Steps to Prepare
- Make the Dough: Combine semolina, flour, melted butter, sugar, and milk in a bowl. Mix until soft and pliable. Let rest for 1 hour.
- Prepare the Filling: Blend dates, nuts, sugar, and rose water into a paste.
- Shape the Maamoul: Take a small ball of dough, flatten it, and add a teaspoon of filling. Seal and shape with a Maamoul mold or by hand.
- Bake: Arrange cookies on a baking sheet and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 15-20 minutes or until golden.
- Cool and Serve: Dust with powdered sugar once cooled and enjoy!
